Quirie Surname History
After considerable research I've found there is the likelihood that the surname Quirie along with its variants comes from the small town of Quiry Le Sec, France. Historically, there was a time period where people began taking on surnames as a way of recognition. Many of the names were their profession, ie. Baker, Hunter, Smith. While others marked familial lineage, ie. Anderson, MacTarnahan, Fitzpatrick. Still there were also names that signified geographical location to tell others where they were from, ie. Von Gmur, Brawley, de Franco and perhaps Quirie.
The surname has been recorded as early as the late 1600's in Scotland, and later in Ireland, England, Canada, The United States, Australia & New Zealand.
Family Tree DNA Project
In an effort to discover more about the Quirie lineage, my father has participated in the Family Tree DNA Project. The hope was to find people from other countries with the Quirie surname and to see how closely related they were. However, there are not many Quirie's and none save my father and one other gentleman have done the dna project. That gentleman did not have any common dna markers with my father even though he shared the surname, his lineage was very different.
This was not a deturant. What we did discover is my fathers DNA is the most common European DNA type. This further encourages our theory that the name was taken by different people, unrelated as a way to indentify were they were from.
